PROGRAM OVERVIEW

What San Antonio Electricians Actually Need on Day One.

The Tradecraft electrical program is built around what San Antonio contractors hire for, not a theoretical overview of the trade. You'll spend the majority of your time in our San Antonio lab, working on actual equipment with instructors who've worked in the local market.

By the end of week six, you'll understand residential and commercial wiring, circuit installation, panel work, NEC code compliance, and electrical safety. You'll earn your OSHA 10 certification and have 240 documented training hours, everything San Antonio employers expect from a new hire.

Tradecraft's pre-apprentice program also prepares you for the professional side of the job: showing up on time, communicating with foremen, understanding job-site culture. The technical skills get you the interview. The soft skills get you the job offer.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

240 hours. 70% of it in the lab.

Most electrical programs bury you in theory before you ever wire a circuit or touch a panel. Tradecraft flips it. You're in the lab from day one, with classroom instruction built around what you need to know to make the lab work make sense.

The 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM daily schedule isn't just structure, it conditions you for the real job before you ever set foot on a job site.

Daily structure: 50 minutes instruction + 10-minute break = 1 clock hour  ·  8 instructional hours per day  ·  7:00 AM – 3:30 PM

SAN ANTONIO ELECTRICAL MARKET

Electricians are in demand
across San Antonio, year round.

San Antonio is one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in Texas. Every new residential development, commercial build, and infrastructure expansion requires licensed electrical teams. Tradecraft Schools graduates enter a high-growth sector with continuous regional demand.

Residential Electrical

Rapid home construction across Alamo Ranch, Converse, Schertz, and the far North Side drives constant need for residential wiremen. From rough-ins to panel installations, local contractors are actively seeking entry-level apprentices.

$21–$24/hr starting

Commercial & Industrial

Major commercial builds in the South Texas Medical Center, downtown San Antonio, and logistics hubs along I-35 require commercial electrical crews. Conduit bending, three-phase power, and NEC compliance give Tradecraft grads an edge.

High demand · Benefits common

Government & Military Facilities

JBSA, Fort Sam Houston, and Lackland AFB rely on local civilian contractors for electrical maintenance and infrastructure upgrades. Military veterans completing Tradecraft's electrical program have a direct pathway into these contracts.

James

Electrical Program Director, Tradecraft Schools  ·  San Antonio, TX
"It's a wise investment. Trust me."

Electrical work pays more than a lot of trades for a reason, James points to the risk. Electricity moves at the speed of light, so a shock can happen in an instant, and commercial jobs demand a wider range of skills than residential work does. That range is also why commercial electricians can stay on one large-scale job for two to three years, while a house gets wired and turned over in a week or two. At $1,200 to $1,300 a week, James says it doesn't take long to earn back what you invest at Tradecraft.

Electrical trade school in San Antonio, answered.

Everything you need to know before you schedule a tour.

How long is the electrical training program?
The Tradecraft electrical program is 6 weeks long, with 240 clock hours of hands-on lab training at our San Antonio campus. That's roughly 40 hours per week, the same commitment as a full-time job.
How much does electrical trade school cost in San Antonio?
Tradecraft's electrical pre-apprentice program is $10,500, significantly less than a 2-year community college program in Texas, which typically runs $15,000–$30,000. Financing starts at $199/month through Climb Credit and Meritize. TWC workforce grants and GI Bill benefits may also apply.
How much do electricians make in San Antonio?
First-year apprentice electricians in San Antonio typically earn $21–$24/hr. The SOTX JATC program publishes a first-year apprentice wage of $19.89/hr. As you progress through your apprenticeship, wages increase significantly, journey-level electricians in the San Antonio market average $35–$45/hr.
What certifications will I earn?
Tradecraft graduates earn an OSHA 10 certification, Texas Electrical Apprentice eligibility through TDLR, and 240 documented clock hours of training. These credentials are what San Antonio electrical contractors look for in a new hire, you won't show up empty-handed.
Can veterans use the GI Bill for electrical trade school in San Antonio?
Yes. Tradecraft works with veterans transitioning from JBSA, Fort Sam Houston, and Lackland AFB. GI Bill benefits can be applied toward the electrical program. Contact our admissions team to verify your specific benefit eligibility and start date options.
Do I need any prior experience to enroll?
No prior electrical experience is required. You need to be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. The program is designed for people starting from zero, career changers, recent high school graduates, and military veterans are all common in our cohorts.
How is Tradecraft different from the JATC apprenticeship in San Antonio?
The SOTX JATC is a 4-year earn-while-you-learn apprenticeship program. It's a great path — but it takes years to complete. Tradecraft is a 6-week pre-apprentice program that gets you job-ready fast so you can enter the workforce as a first-year apprentice and begin earning immediately. Many Tradecraft graduates use the program to get hired and then continue their apprenticeship journey from a position of employment.
